A guide to your summer skincare must-haves

Summer is finally here and we can’t wait for the warm weather, random road trips, and long, sunny days that lie ahead. But remember, as the season changes, so should your skincare! As much as we love summer, the hot and humid weather, makes it a prime time for breakouts to occur. This along with an increase in sun exposure and the difficulty of keeping a consistent skincare routine can lead to breakouts, breakouts, and more breakouts! Follow these tips and tricks to keep your skin clear this summer without missing out on any of the fun.

1) Use an SPF

This summer, SPF should be your BFF, especially if you have acne-prone skin! Acne-prone skin is already inflamed, and sensitive, and excessive exposure to UV rays will only further irritate your already tender skin. Sun damage also causes premature aging and skin cancer, which could lead to much more complicated problems in the future. Check out our past blog post here to get tips on how to pick a sunscreen that’s perfect for YOU!

2) Get a good cleanser

We love sunscreen...BUT be sure to thoroughly wash it off before you go to bed. The combination of sunscreen, sweat, and humidity on a hot summer day can attract a lot of pollen, dirt, and environmental toxins to your skin (hellooo breakouts). Look for a gentle cleanser like Dermala’s CLEANSE with Benefits AM/PM Cleanser that can thoroughly remove dirt and oil without stripping your skin dry. Cleansers that are too harsh will further aggravate sun-damaged skin or any breakouts that you might currently be experiencing.

3) Keep hydrated

When you are dehydrated, so is your skin, and dehydrated skin looks and feels dry, tight, and flaky. Dry skin is also less resilient and more prone to skin damage and wrinkling. So, during those hot, sweaty, summer months, make it a priority to moisturize your skin after every wash and drink lots and lots of water. Both you and your skin will be glowing from the inside out.

4) Supplement your diet with probiotics and vitamins

If you know about Dermala, then you know that we LOVE taking probiotics. Summer parties and travels can make us stray from our (usually) healthy diets, but it’s good to relax and treat yourself sometimes. Since foods high in processed sugars and dairy can cause awful breakouts for some people with acne-prone skin, it’s a good idea to supplement these treats with a probiotic. If taken daily, probiotics can help maintain proper gut health by aiding in digestion and lowering system-wide inflammation. Dermala’s SUPPLEMEANT to Be Daily Pre + Probiotic Mix has goodies like Vitamin C and E to boost collagen production and protect the skin as well as prebiotics and probiotics to support gut-healthy bacteria.

5) Choose your makeup carefully

If you choose to wear makeup and have acne-prone skin, pay extra attention to the makeup you buy. Look for terms on its packaging that say either “oil-free”, “won’t clog pores”, or “non-comedogenic”. It’s also a good idea to ditch heavy formulas during the summer months. Try switching to lighter formulations like BB and CC creams that not only provide coverage but also have great skincare properties too. If you’re new to these formulations, check-out our blog on BB and CC creams here. If you have active breakouts, be very gentle when applying your makeup to not further irritate the skin. Also, wash any brushes you use at least once a week and don’t ever share them or any other applicator with anyone else.

We hope you have an amazing summer and that these tips and tricks help you keep your breakouts tamed during the next couple of months!
