A smoothie recipe for you (and your bacteria)!
The health of your gut can affect the health of your entire body. Your colon has about 10 times as many bacterial cells as we do human cells and these bacteria are necessary for your health. This abundance of bacteria might sound terrifying and gross, but it’s actually a good thing! These bacteria digest our food, produce necessary vitamins and nutrients that we can’t provide ourselves, regulate our immune systems, and prevent pathogens from growing.
Sometimes the bacteria in the colon can become imbalanced, resulting in more harmful bacteria than beneficial bacteria. This imbalance can lead to an increase in system-wide inflammation, which worsens inflammatory diseases like acne.
So, when you think about what to eat to fuel your body, think about feeding your beneficial gut bacteria too! Reach for probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and kefir to add good bacteria to your gut. Also, look for fiber-rich foods that can be used as food by your gut microbes. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes are all great sources of fibers that cannot be digested by you but can be digested by your bacteria.
Here is a quick and delicious smoothie recipe to help you get your daily dose of gut-healthy fiber, vitamins, and nutrients!
