New year, new skin: 3 things to do for your skin in 2023

Looking for a fresh start this new year? Maybe it’s time to up your skincare game!

Whether you’ve made taking better care of your skin a resolution, or are just looking to keep your skin happy in the new year, we have a few simple things you can do for healthier skin.

These three tips can help ensure you get the glowing skin you deserve – from now until 2024 and beyond.

3 tips for healthier skin this year
1. Stay hydrated

The number one thing you can do for your skin – and you body as a whole – is to make an effort to stay hydrated throughout the year, whether it’s in the cool and dry winter months when skin gets dry or the in the heat of the – sometimes equally dehydrating! – summer.

That means drinking lots of water, yes, but also using a microbiome-friendly moisturizer as part of your skincare routine. If you have oily skin, you might think moisturizers are only for those with dry skin, but people with oily skin actually do need a moisturizer too. Look for ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid – like you’ll find in our OAT So Sweet daily moisturizer for acne-prone skin.

You can also help your skin stay hydrated by taking shorter showers and turning down the temperature a little, plus limiting your intake of alcohol, caffeine, sodium, and other dehydrating substances.

2. Get better sleep

Your skin, especially the skin on your face, visibly benefits from good sleep. A good night’s sleep helps skin stay moisturized and keep its natural vibrance and bounce. There are many things good skincare products can do with the right skincare routine, but not getting a good night’s sleep makes even the best products’ jobs harder.

Poor sleep can also contribute to microbiome imbalances, inflammation, acne, premature aging of the skin and more. (And so can too much sun or cold air exposure, so don’t forget to stay covered up and use sunscreen!) So get yourself an app for sleep stories, pull the blackout curtains closed, and build yourself a cozy bedtime routine that leaves you with at least 8 hours sleep on the regular. Your skin – and the rest of your body – will thank you for it.

3. Eat a skin-friendly diet

Last but certainly not least, if you’re battling acne or noticing that your skin could be more brilliant and healthy-looking, improving your diet can make a big difference. Your skin needs nutrients and good, acne-fighting bacteria to stay clear and glowing – and some foods can make skin conditions worse.

So, if you want to improve your skin health this year, avoid sugar and processed foods and add more pre- and probiotics into your diet.

This means eating lots of:

  • fresh vegetables
  • nuts
  • fish
  • beans
  • Vitamin C-rich fruits
  • foods with gut and skin-friendly probiotics like yogurt and kimchi

As long as you’re not allergic, of course.

You should also consider incorporating a skin-friendly probiotic and multivitamin into your diet. After all, taking care of your microbiome can help improve your skin health, reduce inflammation throughout the body, and even improve your mood.

And those are our top tips for kickstarting your skincare in 2023

Resolve to put these tips into action today and you’ll be on the road to a year of great skin.
